Q

How is Confirmation a “double sacrament”?

A

Confirmation and Baptism used to be the same celebration (still is in the Eastern rite)
This changed because of issues with the Bishops
Confirmation completes baptism; bishop does second anointing

Q

According to Aquinas, how did Jesus institute Confirmation?

A

Did not bestow; he PROMISED it
Fullness of Holy Ghost is bestowed upon us in Confirmation
Holy Ghost is not to be given before Christ’s resurrection/ascension
John 16:7 “But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”

Three opinions (all wrong):

  • not instituted by Christ; nor by the apostles, but by one of the councils
  • Apostles instituted it
  • only Christ can institute a new sacrament
