What is conflict?
Disagreements between individuals, groups, cultures or societies which may result from differences in interests, values or actions
Conflict can manifest in various forms, including interpersonal disputes, group tensions, or societal clashes.
Define consensus.
Cultural values or views that are agreed and shared to a significant extent across a society
Consensus is crucial for social cohesion and can impact decision-making processes.
What does authority mean in a societal context?
Power is exercised with the consent of others
Authority can be derived from various sources, including tradition, law, or charisma.
Explain governmentality as per Foucault.
The way that the state exercises control over the population
This concept examines how governments manage and regulate the behavior of individuals and groups.
What is hegemony?
The cultural or political dominance of one social group over another; processes through which the ruling class maintain their power
Hegemony involves the consent of the dominated through cultural and ideological means.
Define ideology.
The system of social and moral ideas held by a group of people
Ideologies shape collective beliefs and influence social behavior.
What is a state?
An organised political community living under a single system of government
States can vary in size, governance structures, and authority.
What does resistance mean in a social context?
Not accepting change in its apparent form; either refusing outright or compromising with a modified form
Resistance can take many forms, from passive non-compliance to active protest.
Define social control.
Any means to control and maintain behavioural norms and regulate conflict
Social control can be formal (laws) or informal (social norms) and is essential for societal order.
