1st Fort Laramie Treaty
Government agreed to pay tribes $50,000 per year and protect Indians from settlers. Indians agreed to stop fighting, allow government to build
roads / plan railroad through Indian land.
Little Crow’s War 1862
The Chief of Dakota Sioux in Minnesota, Little Crow, led the war after the Government delayed payment towards the Native Indians and protection from hostile settlers, when they agreed to give up 24 acres of their land to live in reservations.
Sand Creek Massacre 1864
When gold found in
Montana prospectors travelled across Cheyenne (indian land) and Chiefs agreed to move to reservations. However young warriors refused causing major conflict and a massacre of 130 Native indian women and children.
Red Cloud’s War 1866-88
When gold discovered in Montana, prospectors travelled there on the Bozeman Trail, which broke the Fort Laramie Treaty, resulting in a war between the government and the natives.
2nd Fort Laramie Treaty
The government agreed to close the Bozeman Trail and the forts along it. In return, Red Cloud agreed to move his people to the Great Sioux Reservation in Dakota. No whites were allowed to enter this land.
Dawes Act 1887
Each Indian family offered 160 acres to become a US citizen. All remaining land could be sold to whites. Aim was to make individual families farm and behave more like white Americans (assimilate).
Wounded Knee Massacre 1890
Reservations worsened when govt cut rations and drought in 1890. Wovoka had a vision that if Indians reject white ways and perform a sacred Ghost Dance all dead Indians will come back to destroy white settlers. US Army caught them as they were fleeing and killed 250 men, women and children.
