When does a conflict of interest exist?
when a person’s or institution’s secondary interests (e.g., financial gain, career advancement) could influence professional judgment about research responsibilities (e.g., protecting human subjects, ensuring objectivity).
Do policies need to be in place at the IRB in regards to COI? If so, what do the policies need to do?
Yes. The policies need to be in place for identifying and managing COI
Document that members recused themselves from vote and were not counted toward quorum
Be aware of COIs involving investigators and ensure that management plans are in place

They must recuse themselves from discussion and voting and not count toward quorum.

Institutions are expected to:
Have written COI policies
