Authority
power exercised with others’ consent
Conflict
disagreements between individuals, groups, cultures, or societies that may be caused by differences in values, actions, and interests
Consensus
the theory that cultural values and beliefs are learned and shared to a significant extent across a society and there is a general level of agreement about these values/beliefs
Governmentality
refers to the methods in which the state exercises control over the population (term coined by Michel Foucault)
Hegemony
one social group’s cultural/political dominance over others; the cultural processes through which the ruling classes maintain their power
Ideology
system of social and moral ideas of a group of people, or the commitment to these central values
Resistance
the act of social groups either refusing or modifying it to accommodate an unaccepted change
Social control
the means used to maintain behavioral norms while regulating conflict
State
an organized political community living under a single system of government
Belief and Knowledge
a set of convictions, ideas, and values that are shared and regarded as “the truth” by a social group
Identity
the way an individual views them self or the way they are viewed from a social group’s perspective (can be through ethnicity, religion, or nationality)
Materiality
the cultural meaning of objects, resources, and belongings that influence social structure (ex: power resonates from money, money is shown through objects + possessions such as cars, houses, etc.)
Power
the ability of an individual/group to influence, change, or manipulate others/environment/resources, and forms the social structure + creates inequality
Social Relations
any relationship between 2 or more individuals within a network of groups/social relations
Society
the way individuals organize themselves in a network of relationships/groups, and is sustained/created through social relationships
Symbolism
the significance a society attaches to objects, actions, and processes; creating a network of symbols through which they construct a culture’s web of meaning
