Conflicts and solutions (River Landscapes) Flashcards
(10 cards)
Farmers v Dog walkers
Dogs not properly controlled can chase and harm sheep. Even if they do not physically harm the sheep, pregnant sheep can be scared into miscarrying
Wind Farms v Locals (3)
Some people think wind turbines look ugly and spoil the scenery
People also complain about the noise
People also complain about bird getting killed by flying into the turbines
Fishing v White water rafting (2)
Noisy rafters can scare off fish
Fishing lines can get caught in rafts
Farmers v Walkers (4)
Walkers might drop litter
Walkers might leave gates open letting farm animals loose
They might trample over crops
Farmers might illegally close off public footpaths on their land
Forestry v Walkers (2)
Some walkers complain that commercial forests create a ‘blot’ on the landscape especially when large areas of wood is cut down
Walkers might get annoyed if forest paths are closed at short notice due to logging
Farmers v Water Storage
Any chemicals sprayed by farmers can end up being washed into water supply which pollutes the water and can be expensive to clean up
Solution: Walkers v Farmers (3)
- Teaching people about the country code and how to behave in the countryside to educate people not to do things like leave gates open or litter
- Providing leaflets, information boards, tv and radio adverts to educate people on countryside etiquette
- Walkers can keep dogs on leashes when entering farm sites
Solution: Walkers v Forestry (3)
- Forestry workers can make their forests look more natural by planting a better mix of trees species.
- They can also leave trees around the section they are harvesting so it reduces visual impact from the outside during logging.
- They can give more advance notice of path closures and provide alternate walking routes.
Solution: Windfarms v Locals (2)
- Wind farms can be located in carefully considered places that wont disturb locals
- One of the blades can be painted with a dark coloured strip. Studies have shown that this reduces bird deaths by 70%
Solution: Water storage and supply v Farmers (2)
- Farmers can utilise organic farming
- SEPA monitors water quality (and other environmental impacts of land uses) and can fine people and close down places that pollute the water
