16
Q

When is Normative Social Influence likely to occur?

A

In situations with strangers where you may feel concerned about rejection or approval of friends which we may have a greater need for social support.

17
Q

What change does Normative Social Influence lead to and what does it change?

A

Temporary Change in opinions or behaviours. Emotional rather than cognitive process.

18
Q

What is Informative Social Influence?

A

Who has the better information-you or the group.

19
Q

When does Informative Social Influence occur?

A

If we are uncertain about what behaviours/beliefs are right or wrong. We follow the behaviour of the majority of the group as we want to be right.

20
Q

What type of process is Informative Social Influence?

A

Cognitive Process

21
Q

What is one strength of NSI?

A

Evidence supports it as an explanation of conformity.

22
Q

Who is the psychologist which relates to this and studied it?

A

Asch

23
Q

What did Asch’s participants say about their conformity?

A

They conformed as they felt self conscious giving the correct answer in the experiment and were therefore afraid of disapproval.

24
Q

What happened when the answers were written down instead of answered verbally?

A

Conformity fell to 12.5% meaning that there were no normative group pressure.

25
Q

What does this stat display about conformity?

A

Some conformity is due to a desire not to be rejected by the group.(NSI)

26
Q

What did Luas et al find out about ISI?

A

Participants conformed more often to incorrect answers they gave when the maths problems were difficult.

27
Q

What was the difference of when it was hard vs when it was easy?

A

E-participants ‘knew their own mind’
H-situation became ambiguous

28
Q

What does this difference show about ISI and conformity?

A

ISI is a valid explanation of conformity as the results were what as expected.

29
Q

What is the counterpoint of the research support for ISI?

A

Hard to separate ISI and NSI as both processes probably operate together in most real world conformity situations.

30
Q

What are the 3 basic individual differences in NSI?

A

-Doesn’t predict conformity in every case.
-Some people are focused on being liked by others.
Some people have the need for ‘affiliation’. (nAffiliators)

31
Q

What did Paul McGhee and Richard Teevan find out about students who were nAffiliators?

A

More likely to conform

32
Q

NSI and Individual Differences

A

NSI underlines conformity for some more than others. There are individual differences in conformity which cannot be fully explained by one generalised theory.

33
Q

What does the counterpoint suggest about the NSI and ISI distinction?

A

Not useful as it is impossible to work out which is really operating.

34
Q

What could Lucus et al’s findings be subject to?

A

NSI/ISI or both.

35
Q

What does Asch’s research demonstrate?

A

Clearly demonstrates NSI and ISI as both the reasons for conformity

36
Q

Which is stronger: Conformity or Internalisation? And why?

A

Internalisation as individuals adopt different social roles for different social situations and only to conform to particular roles whilst in those situations.

37
Q

In what way is conformity to social roles useful?

A

Understanding and predicting social behaviour, which brings reassuring sense of order to our social interactions.

38
Q

Which is stronger: Conformity or Compliance? And what does it involve?

A

Conformity. Involving both private and public acceptance of the behaviour and attitudes exhibited.
