What are the 3 types of Conformity?
-Compliance
-Internalisation
-Identification
What is Compliance?
Individuals go along with the group in order to gain their approval or to avoid their disapproval.
Is Compliance public or private?
Public-only the views/behaviours are displayed in public.
What type of change Compliance and what influences this change?
Superficial Change which is influenced as group pressure.
What is Internalisation?
Individuals go along with the group because of an acceptance of their views.
Is Internalisation public or private?
Both
What happens in Internalisation when they are exposed to views of other members of the group?
Individuals are encouraged to engage in validation.
What type of change Internalisation and what influences this change?
Usually a permanent change and persists in the absence of the group-attitudes have become part of how the person thinks.(internalised)
What is Identification?
Individual might accept influence as they want to be associated with another person or group.
Is Identification public or private?
Public
What does the individual get out of the group in Identification?
By accepting the group’s attitudes and behaviours they feel more part of it.
What does Identification contain?
Elements of both Compliance and Internalisation.
What is the reason for accepting in Identification?
Accepts the attitudes and behaviours they are adopting as true and right but the purpose is to be accepted as a member of the group.
What are the two explanations of Conformity?
-Normative Social Influence
-Informative Social Influence
What is Normative Social Influence?
All about Norms and what is normal for a social group.
