What is Atresia ?
A passage in the animals body is unusually narrow or absent. It can affect many parts of the body and requires veterinary advice.
What are the two main types of Atresia ?
Oesophageal atresia - Oesophagus ends in a pouch and does not allow access to the stomach
Pulmonary atresia - pulmonary valve does not form properly so blood cannot flow though the heart
What is Cryptorchidisum ?
One or both of the testes do not descend from the abdominal cavity to the scrotum leading to fertility problems.
What is Glycogen storage disease?
The animal does not have all the enzymes needed to convert glycogen into energy for the body to use resulting in poor growth.
What is a Hernia ?
An opening in the muscle allowing other body tissues to pass though. If protruding tissue becomes stragulated there is a risk of infection or tissue death.
What are the 3 types of Hernia ?
Inguinal , Umbilical and diaphragmatic
What is poor weight gain ?
General poor development and low weight gain
What is polydactyly ?
The animal has extra digits on one or more limbs. In some species this is encouraged such as dogs which work in the snow.
What is scoliosis?
Crookedly aligned vertebrae leaving the animal with a curved spine
What is a congenital condition?
A condition which is present from birth
What is a hereditary condition?
A condition which is inherited from the parents
