Congential Heart Defecfs Effects on Blood Flow. Flashcards

1
Q

Pulmonic stenosis:
This is an acyanotic condition.

This is characterized by narrowing of the pulmonic valve.

Description:
May or may not involve the valve. Increased right-sided pressure. This increases workload. This causes right-sided heart failure.

Findings:
Grade 3 through 4/5 is harsh, mid to late systolic ejection murmur over pulmonic region and left sternal border. Cyanosis, symptoms of right CHF can occur.

Management:
Valvuloplasty is completed in cath lab.

How does this condition affect blood flow?

Q

Coarctation of aorta:
This is a CYANOTIC condition.

Description:
Narrowed aortic lumen with obstruction to flow causing increased left ventricular pressure and increasing workload. This leads to left-sided heart failure.

Findings:
Upper extremity hypertension plus bounding pulses would lower extremity hypotension and weak pulses. Decreased systolic perfusion. Congestive heart failure, systolic ejection murmur in left intraclavicular region with transmission to back and left axilla.

Management:
Surgical repair during neonatal period, only preformed in emergency or elective at 2 to 4 years of age.

Procedure:
Balloon angioplasty in Cath Lab.

Q

Aortic stenosis. This is an acyanotic condition. Description. This is characterized by a narrowing of the aortic valve creating an obstruction in the system bloodflow. Often not diagnosed until later.

Findings:
Fatigue, dyspnea, angina, CHF, grade 3 through 4/6 harsh systolic ejection murmur at upper right sternal border, poor peripheral pulses, and poor cardiac output.

Management:
Surgical repair such as aortic valvoyomy followed by valve replacement if necessary. Other procedures Kono or Ross. Avoidance of sports often recommended because of risk of sudden death.
