Connective Tissue Flashcards
(25 cards)
What do fibroblasts look like?
Stellate/spindle shaped
Large, granular ovoid nucleus
What do fibroblasts do?
Synthesise extra cellular matrix
Replicate for repair
What cells partly surround endothelial cells of capillaries?
Pericytes
2 functions of adipocytes
Synthesise, store and release fat
Insulation
2 functions of mast cells
Mediate the inflammatory process
Release granules
2 functions of macrophages
Presents antigens to lymphocytes
Produce cytokines
Plasma cells are
Mature b lymphocytes
Manufacture antibodies
What do basophils do?
Release chemicals that initiate, maintain and control the inflam process
pH of blood?
7.4
Name 3 granulocytes
Neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils
Name 2 agranularcytes
Monocytes (macrophages) and lymphocytes
What is plasma?
Yellowish fluid which cells, platelets, organic compounds and electrolytes are dissolved
Lifespan of an erythrocyte?
120 days
What is haematpoeisis?
Manufacture of blood cells
Occurs in yolk sac and liver in fetus
Occurs in bone marrow after birth
Name 4 cells needed to keep stem cells viable
Fibroblasts, endothelial cells, macrophages and far cells
What is the growth factor for red blood cells?
Erythropoietin (produced in kidney)
What can lead to anaemia?
Deficiencies in iron, B12, folate or erythropoietin
What leads to decreased number of white blood cells?
Drug induced, autoimmune disease, viral, aplastic anaemia or acute leukemia
What is acute leukemia?
Malignant disorder of blood and bone marrow
Bone marrow replaced with immature malignant blast cells (no function)
How are platelets formed?
Megakaryocytes are large multinucleated cells, platelets break off from the Megakaryocyte cytoplasm
What is the growth factor for platelets?
Thrombopoetin (platelet=thrombocyte)
Platelet function and lifespan
Play a crucial role in haemostasis
Circulate or 6-8days then destroyed by spleen
Injury to blood vessel wall causes what?
Activates tissue factor which activates coagulation
Exposed CT allows platelet binding and activation
What does platelet activation cause?
Serotonin and thromboxane to cause vasoconstriction
Coagulation cascade activates thrombin which converts fibrinogen to fibrin
