Connective tissue Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the connective tissues function?
- These bind, support and strengthens other body tissues
- Their a big transport system (blood is a connective tissue)
- A big site of stored energy reserves(Fat and adipose tissue is a connective tissue)
- If you can see your connective tissue, something is very wrong and youโre likely badly injured as itโs not found on the body surface (unlike epithelia) and it can be highly vascular. However LIKE epithelia it has a lot of nerves (excluding cartilage)
Equation for connective tissue
CT = ECM + C
Equation for extracellular matrix
ECM = GS + Fibres
Equation for ground substance
GS = H20 + proteins + polysaccharides
What are GAGS?
Glycosaminoglycans or mucopolysaccharides, they are negatively charged polysaccharide compounds
Name the three kinds of protein fibres
- Collagen fibres
- Reticular fibres
- Elastic fibres
Describe collagen fibres
Strong and flexible, is the most abundant protein and is common in bones, cartilages, tendons e.t.c
Describe reticular fibres
Composed of collagen with coating glycoprotein, is made by fibroblasts and forms part of the basement membrane
Describe elastic fibres
Thinner than collagen fibres, very stretchy as name suggest, found in skin, blood vessels and lungs
What are the two common types of connective tissue and a brief description?
- Fibroblasts - Widely distributed in connective tissues, the secrete components of the matrix (Fibres and GS)
- Adipocytes - Fat cells, under skin and around organs and they store fat (triglycerides)
Connective tissues can be eitherโฆ
Embryonic or mature
