Connective Tissue Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is this?

Connective Tissue Proper
What is a Fibroblast?
Cells that create the tissue
What are Collagen Fibers?
Thick white fibers that are very strong and are made by the fibroblasts through protein synthesis.
How does a Capillary relate to Connective Tissue Proper?
The more room in the matrix = more blood vessels found
What is a Mast Cell?
A type of WBC (basophil) commonly found in CT. Releases histamine or heparine (anticoagulant).
What are other names for WBC?
Neotrophil or monocyte
What are Reticular Fibers?
Small collagen fibers secreted by fibroblasts
Explain what a Matrix, or IF, is.
Fluid filled space between cells.
What are some identifiers of Adipose Tissue?
- Very Vascular
- Rule Breaker: Has Cellularity
- Vascule with in cell to store triglycerides
What are some identifiers of Loose Reticular?
- Makes up framework of a hollow organ
- Very vascular to filter the lymphs
What are some identifiers of Dense Irregular?
- Fibroblasts with lots of Collagen Fibers
What are some characteristics of Fibrocartilage?
- Alt. rows of cells, matrix, and fibers create a tissue that can absorb a lot of forces. (Similar to a spring)
What are some characteristics of Elastic Cartilage?
- Strong like hyaline but elastic fibers allow it to return to original shape after bending
- Ex: External ears, epiglottis
What are characteristics of Osseus ( Bone Connective Tissue)?
- Gel like matrix of the cartilage has Ca++ Salts added making the matrix even harder
- 2 types: Compact and Spongy
- Very vascular - has canals containing blood vessels runnning through matrix to give nutrient delivery (compact) or houses red marrow (spongy)
- Large nerve supply
- High amount of collagen fibers for strength
- Osteoblasts, osteoclasts, osteoples
What is a Lamella?
A ring of cells.
What is an Osteocyte?
A bone cell.
What is a Lacurae?
A little lake where cells live.
What are Canaliculi?
Tiny canals that carry nurients from one lacurae to another.
What do the Haverson Canal or Central Canal do?
Carries blood vessels and nerves to the groups of lamella belonging to that group (Haversion system of osteon).
What does the Volkmann’s or Perforating land do?
Travel at right angles connecting osteons, periosteum, and medalany cavity.
What are the characteristics of Blood?
- Matrix is a fluid known as Plasma
- Filters are used for Bloodclotting
- Stay in inactive form and do not become visible until the clotting process is activated
- More matrix than cells
- Cells originate from Red Bone Marrow by Hemocytoblasts
- Erythrocytes = RBC’s
- Leukocytes = WBC’s
- Thrombocytes = Platelets
What are characteristics of Connective Tissue?
- Most common tissue
- More matrix than cells
- Fibers running through the matrix
- Job is to hold things together and provide structure and support
- Vasculartiy varies with different connective tissues
- Cells are named by the tissue they make
- Ex: Adipose tissue, bones, ligaments, cartilage, loose connective tisse that holds organs together
What are Collagen Fibers?
These are one of the strongest proteins the body makes. It is formed by the cell. Vitamin C and the mineral copper are need to form strong collagen fibers - also know as White Fibers.
What are Reticular Fibers?
These are the tiny versions of collagen fibers.
