After conscription was introduced in 1916, women worked in factories
Women as nurses
Women were needed to tend to men’s wounds on the front lines in France and Belgium. They slept in their clothes and their hair short. They wore boots and had lice on their clothes and their underclothes stuck to them.
What were the Women’s land Army
With men away fighting, someone had to bring in the harvests and keep the farms going. The WLA was then formed and their uniform was brown corduroy trousers, green jerseys and leggings. A WLA hat and hobnail boots.
How much were the WLA PAID
18 shillings a week, they spent 12 to board and food and 6 shilling was left.
WLA’s harvesting was done
By hand and horses.
