Shays’ Rebellion

A

A captain in the Revolution turned Massachussets farmer that armed other farmers in an attempt to force the government to meet their demands. He lost his farm because the creditors from Boston imposed harsh taxes to make up for the debts the state had from the Revolutionary War. Their demands included paper money to drive off debts, tax relief, switching the capital from Boston, and abolition of debt imprisionment.

A

The first government plan, didn’t have just one person in power to prevent tyranny, had Congress, legislatures and governors. Gave Congress national authority, each state had one vote, 2/3 of the states had to agree for new law to pass. Congress could raise army.

South wanted their slaves to count for their population in order to increase voting power. The North opposed to this, their reasoning being that slaves weren’t allowed to vote and therefore shouldn’t be counted. To compromise, every five enslaved meant three free persons.
