What is urbanisation
The growth in the proportion of people living in urban areas (eg towns or cities)
Patterns of urbanisation
-1945 1/3 of the worlds population (0.7 billion)
-2015 1/2 of the worlds population (4 billion)
-2050 2/3 of the worlds population
What is urbanisation like in poorer countries
● Urbanisation is happening faster in poorer countries as more are moving for better work and health opportunities which are available in cities.
● Since 1950, the rate of urbanisation has grown for both richer and poorer countries but the rate has been twice as great in poorer countries than richer countries
What is suburbanisation
The migration of people from city centres to the outskirts of cities
-more space
-improvements to transport links means people can live further away
What is counter-urbanisation
The movement of people out of the city into surrounding villages and rural areas
-quieter, cheaper property, more peaceful
-improvements in transport, people can work from home
What is urban resurgence
The movement of people back into the city centre
-may move back because of lack of jobs in rural or suburban areas
-attracted to new developments
How have the number of megacities changed
● in 1950 there were only two - Tokyo and New York
● 2015 there were 35
● predicted to rise to 41 by 2030
Why do megacities develop
because of rural-urban migration and natural increase
migrants tend to move to large cities, and to cities that are experiencing rapid economic growth, so their population increases rapidly
What is a world city
A city that has political and financial influence over the world
features of world cities
-usually dominate world trade
-good international transport links
-well renowned universities
-cultural centres, media
-large numbers of migrants, tourists
