Q

Representation

A

Representation is the breaking down of ideological concepts into sounds and images. This focuses mainly on the continual representation of stereotypes, the presentation of ideas in new formats and who is being represented and for which purpose.

Ways to analyse a piece for representation include mediation, discourses and advice.

Mediation:
• Is how a creator selects, interprets, and represents social, economic, political and cultural events.

When analysing:
• consider the target audience, regulatory controls, sources of funding, ownership, and what’s currently valued in the news.
• consider the role of the media in creating and perpetuating the representations.
• Consider the reason and method of selection and de-selection

When analysing discourse:
• expressions of shared systems of meaning such as ideologies and myths.
• dominant or oppositional discourses which reflect struggles between differing groups on society.
