In the Middle Ages it was believed that the devil could create illusions in order to lead people into temptation. The battle between good and evil is known as phantasmagoria.

The murder of Banquo : natural order
A
• It was believed at the time that the ‘goddess’ of a king directly affected the condition of the natural world.
• The ‘natural order ‘ similar to the idea that kings were chosen by God. A king chosen by God would be good, moral and therefore the natural world would be as it should be.
• Macbeth wasn’t chosen to be king by God. He disturbed the ‘natural order’ by killing the king. Macbeth became king and the natural world has become chaos. For the natural world to return, Macbeth must be removed from the throne.
