Venice was known for being diverse, filled with trade and opportunity, would of been associated with exotic excitement yet dangerously otherworldly- see this through Iago’s racism yet the Venetian’s intrigue with Othello’s story’s, Venice was thought of as being sexually
Context of women and marriage (Othello)
women were suburbanites to men in the 16th and 17th century, when married there belongings went to there husbands, fathers were expected to choose husbands for there daughters (presented through Emilia giving Iago handkerchief), Venice- seen as having sexual freedom shown through the characters assuming there wives where cheating on them

After the war in America it became industrial and commercial (capitalist)- idea of social mobility- positive
