When did great depression occur and what happened
1929-1936 and this is where millions of dollars were wiped out when the US stock market plummeted.
There was immense poverty and unemployment rose from 3% to a third of American families
How did the Great depression affect peoples mindset
No room for emotional attachments that had outlived their purpose.
Cruel/Harsh nature of the time meant people could only look after themselves and not others
Dust bowl and its effects
A drought occured in states around Texas. This caused the land to become infertile and dry.
Which meant many farmers had to migrate to states like California to earn money.
Many of these migrants became ranch hands. A hard job and it paid low but gave them a place to sleep
American dream
The dream that the Americas are a land of oppurtunity
Views on the elderly/disabled
Elderly people were seen as a burden. As there was no pension. They couldnt work most jobs as they were quite physicallly demanding.
The disabled were treated unsympathetically. They were heavily dosed with drugs and brain surgeries took place.
Views on black people and Jim Crow laws
Jim crow laws-Allowed for racial segregation in America. They were denied right to vote and have jobs.
During the great depression white people called for balck people to be removed from jobs so that they could have them.
Lynchings were common and the rise of the KKK led to various murders.
Views on women
Women are either maternal or sex symbols. Very stereotypical
Women are not equal to men. They were paid less and usually did domestic jobs.
No women in George and Lennies dream. As women are not important to them
Curley’s wife is isolated
