- the 1920s America became known as the jazz age because of the popular musical genre which reflected a spirit of rebelliousness and pleasure-seeking

Between 1920-1933 there was a ban on selling and making alcohol in America, there was much alcohol consumed in the novel nonetheless

The tumultuous decade known for its wild parties, dancing and illegal drinking and its post-war prosperity and its new freedoms for women
Lost generation
A term coined by Gertrude Stein
Fitzgerald’s portrayal of Gatsby’s relentless pursuit of Daisy and reinvention of self reflects the disillusionment characteristic of the Lost Generation, a term used to describe post-WWI American writers who felt alienated by modern society’s loss of traditional values.
