How do estrogen conraceptives work (3)?
1) Ovulation inhibited because E suppresses FSH and LH, preventing pit gland to release ovary stimulating hormone.
2) Endometrial secretions/cellular structure altered
3) Altered levels of prostaglandins = degeneration of CL
How do progesterone contraceptives work?
1) Ovulation is inhibited by supression of midpeak LH and FSH
2) Thickened cervical mucus (poor lil sperm)
3) Activity of cilia of F tubes is reduced
4) Endometruim becomes atrophic

Long Acting Reversable Contraceptives : IUDs and maybe implant?
What is LAM?
Lactation Amenorrhea Method
What are the criteria for LAM?
1) Less than 6 mo pp

Highest failure rate contraceptive IRL?
Withdrawl
Most effective with every day use?
Implant
how do LNG-IUDs prevent pregnancy?
1) Thickens cervical mucus - harder for sperm to get to egg and survive
2) Suppresses formation of endometrium which is essential for development of implanting
3) In about 50 % of the population stops/suppresses ovulation
4) Inhibits sperm function
