Contraception Flashcards
(24 cards)
What method is a condom?
Barrier method
What is a condom?
A rubber or polyurethane sheath rolled over the erect penis
What is an advantage of the condom?
Can prevent STIs
What is a disadvantage of the condom?
Can split
What method is the diaphragm (female)?
Barrier method
What is a diaphragm?
A latex or silicone device with spermicide on it, that is put into the vagina to cover the cervix.
What is an advantage of the diaphragm?
No health risks.
What is a disadvantage of the diaphragm?
Needs to be left in several hours after sex which could be irritative. Some people are sensitive to the spermicide.
What method is the pill?
Hormonal
What is the pill?
Contains synthetic oestrogen and progesterone which inhibit FSH production so that no eggs are released. It also thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm reaching an egg.
What method is the implant?
Hormonal
What is the implant?
A small flexible rod is implanted under skin of upper arm and it releases oestrogen and progesterone slowly which inhibits production of FSH and therefore release of eggs, for a number of months or years.
What is an advantage of the pill?
It doesn’t interrupt sex
What is a disadvantage of the pill?
It can increase your blood pressure.
What method is the patch?
Hormonal
What is the patch?
A sticky patch is put on the skin and it releases oestrogen and progesterone slowly, inhibiting FSH and therefore release of eggs.
What is an advantage of the patch?
Effective
What is a disadvantage of the patch?
Increases risk of cervical cancer and blood clots.
What method is the coil?
Barrier
What is the coil?
Placed in uterus to prevent a fertilised egg from implanting in the uterus. The copper wound around plastic is toxic to sperm.
What is an advantage of the coil?
Works immediately and can stay in place for 10 years if copper, 3-5 years if hormonal.
What is a disadvantage of the coil?
Insertion may be uncomfortable, periods may be longer and more painful.
What is a barrier method?
Prevent sperm reaching egg, prevent embryos from implanting in uterus, use spermicidal to kill sperm, surgical methods of male and female sterilisation, not having intercourse when egg may be in oviduct.
What is a hormonal method?
Oestrogen and progesterone inhibiting FSH.
