Conveyors Flashcards
(38 cards)
What device is used to confine material to a belt conveyor
Skirts and skirt boarding
Why are idler rollers shimmed slightly in the direction of travel
This provides a slight training effect on the belt
If a belt conveying system is running out in all parts of the system what is a probable cause
The probable cause is improperly spliced belt
An idler roller that is used to shape the belt at any angle from the horizontal are called
They are called transition idlers
What is the minimum belt splice for elevator belts with 10 plies or less?
It must be at least the width of the belt
Chain conveyors need ___________ to maintain contact with the bed and the chain?
It must contain CAMBER
A cyclone is installed on pneumatic conveyors to do what?
It is used to seperate solid material from the air
What is a major advantage of steel chain conveyors?
They can have attachments welded to them
Which chain construction is the strongest for conveying?
H-Class Chain
What is used to remove metal from a conveyor system?
Magnetic pulley is used
What are the 3 major sections of a belt?
Top cover, bottom cover, and the carcass
What type of belt is used in extreme tension?
Steel cord belt is used when extreme operating tension is constant
What is the strongest type of splice that is used with belts?
Hot vulcanized is the strongest and most preferred type of splice
What is the purpose of a crowned pulley?
A crowned pulley is designed with the diameter of the center of the pulley being larger than the rim forcing the belt to the high spot. They should not be used with steel cord belts or with snub pulleys.
What is the largest pulley in the system?
Head pulley, is the largest and may or may not be the drive
What are advantages of lagged pulleys?
Increase the coefficiant of friction resulting in lower belt tension, reduces belt slippage in wet conditions and increased life for the belt and the pulleys
What is the major advantafe of a side lagged pulley?
They can be replaced without removing the belt.
What is the purpose of a tail pulley?
The return the belt
What is the purpose of a snub pulley?
It is used to increase the arc of contact on the drive pulley
What pulley would be used to change the direction of the belt? (Example would bd to change direction for gravity take up)
Bend pulleys are used to accomplish this.
Troughing idlers use 3 rolls, what are the angles they are?
20, 35, 45 (2 idlers engage and center roll is flat. \ __ / )
Where does a gravity take up usually placed? And are usually used on belts greater than?
They are placed near the drive pulley and usually used on systems larger than 100ft between head and tail pulley
Where is screw take ups used?
They are ysed on small and light conveyors and are located on the tail pulley
Where is loading preferred on belt conveyors?
As closely to the center of the belt and in the same direction of travel (preferably at the same speed)
