Cooling and Power Flashcards
(39 cards)
What is passive cooling?
Passive cooling relies on components without moving parts or power.
What is active cooling?
Active cooling uses fans powered by electricity to increase airflow and dissipate heat
What do case fans do?
Case fans circulate cool air into the case and expel hot air out
What causes the power supply to generate heat?
AC to DC conversion
What is closed loop system cooling?
Cooling of a single component
Where does the heat go in a closed loop system?
Heat goes from the heat sink to the radiator
What does the water loop/tubing do in an open loop cooling system?
It circulates coolant throughout the system
What does the pump do in an open loop cooling system?
It pushes liquid through the system
What does the reservoir do in an open loop cooling system?
It holds coolant, accommodating expansion and contraction
What does the Water Block/Bracket do in an open loop cooling system?
It transfers heat from components to the liquid
What does the radiator do in an open loop cooling system?
It dissipates heat from coolant as air passes over its surface
What kind of power is delivered to computer components via the PSU?
Direct Current (DC)
What kind of power is provided from wall outlets?
Alternating Current (AC)
What is the standard AC power in the US
110-120 volts, 60 Hz (low-line power)
What is the standard AC power in Europe and Asia
230-240 volts (high-line power)
What does the transformer do in a PSU?
The transformer reduces high AC voltage to lower levels suitable for computers
What do regulators and filters do in a PSU?
They ensure clean and stable DC output for components
What is a modular PSU?
A modular PSU allows for unused cables to be detached from the PSU
What are redundant power supplies?
They provide dual power supplies for continuous operation
What is a benefit of redundant power supplies?
One PSU can fail without shutting down the whole system; ideal for servers
How many pins can a CPU connector have?
4, 6 or 8
How many pins can PCIe power connectors have?
6 or 8
What is a Molex connector?
A Molex connector is a legacy power connector used for older IDE/PATA hard disks and optical drives
How many pins did Molex have?
4 pins
