Coordinated body systems Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is the major function of the Respiratory System?
Facilitates gas exchange, bringing oxygen into the body and removing carbon dioxide.
What does the Circulatory System do?
Transports nutrients, gases, and wastes through the bloodstream.
What is the primary function of the Digestive System?
Breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and removes indigestible waste.
What is the role of the Excretory System?
Eliminates waste products from the body.
How do body systems maintain homeostasis?
Each system supports the others in maintaining homeostasis.
What is the process of chemical digestion in the Digestive System?
Complex nutrients are broken down into simple substances: Carbohydrates → Glucose, Proteins → Amino Acids, Lipids → Fatty Acids and Glycerol.
How are simple substances absorbed in the Digestive System?
They are absorbed through the walls of the small intestine via diffusion into the bloodstream.
What is diffusion?
Random movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until equilibrium is reached, driven by particle collisions.
Give an example of diffusion in the body.
Glucose diffuses from the small intestine into blood capillaries.
What is the process of ventilation in the Respiratory System?
Air moves in and out through inhalation and exhalation.
What is the pathway of air in the Respiratory System?
Air travels through the nose, enters the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and finally the lungs.
What happens during inhalation?
Air fills the alveoli, which is rich in oxygen.
How does oxygen diffuse in the alveoli?
Oxygen moves from the alveoli into the blood due to a higher concentration of oxygen in the alveoli than in the blood.
What surrounds the alveoli?
Tiny blood vessels called capillaries.
What is the function of the heart in the Circulatory System?
It pumps blood throughout the body.
What are the three main types of blood vessels?
Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries.
What is the role of blood in the Circulatory System?
It carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products.
How does the Excretory System remove waste?
Urea is filtered by the kidneys and removed from the body as urine.
What does the circulatory system supply to cells?
Oxygen gas (via respiratory system) and Glucose and other nutrients (via digestive system).
What does the circulatory system remove from cells?
Carbon dioxide (via respiratory system) and Urea and other wastes (via excretory system).
What cultural insight is provided about Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander understanding?
Detailed X-ray art demonstrates a deep cultural understanding of internal systems of organisms.
What art task is suggested for students?
Create X-ray art of an Australian animal, accurately depicting the internal systems based on knowledge of respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and excretory systems.
