Coordination and Control Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is homostasis
maintenance of the constant internal environment
What is a cell
The smallest structural unit of living organisms.
Organ
different types of tissues grouped together to preform a particular function
System
different organs working together to perform a specialised function to keep an organism alive.
Tissue
A collection of similar cells that preform a particular function
What are receptors
specialised type of nerve cell that is located in sense cells, different types of receptors respond to particular stimuli.
EARS, NOSE, TONGUE, SKIN
What is a stimulus
Any change in the internal or external environment
Internal:
Types of receptors
- Mechanoreceptors
- Chemoreceptors
- Thermoreceptors
- Photoreceptors
What stimuli do receptors respond to?
Mechanoreceptors - pressure(touch) and sound
Chemo receptors - Chemicals
Thermorecotors - temperature
Photorecptors - light
Where are receptors located?
Mechano - skin, ear
Chemo - tongue, nose, internal (like blood vessels)
Thermo - skin
Photo - eye
Control center
Specialised cells located in brain and spinal cord
What does a control centre do?
Recieves information from the receptors, decides whether to respond and if so, determines an answer and sends it to the effector.
What is an effector?
A muscle or gland that receives information from the control centre and responds accordingly.
Stimulus response model
Stimulus -> Receptor -> Control
< Feedback Centre
Response <- Effector <-
What types of feeback is there?
- negative
- positive
What is negative feedback
Aims to reduce the stimulus
What is positive feedback?
Aims to increase the stimulus
