What is the mission statement of the RICS?
- To qualify and equip members to offer the highest standards of professional services
- To promote and enforce standards
- To lead solutions to the major challenges facing the built environment through professional expertise

What are the New Rules of Conduct?
Rule 1 - Act with integrity and honesty
Rule 2 - Maintain professional competence
Rule 3 - Provide good quality and diligent services
Rule 4 - Treat others with Respect and encourage diversity and inclusion
Rule 5 - Act in the public Interest and take responsibility for their actions

Why did the Rules of Conduct change?
- In place since 2007
- Research and consultation with members, firms and members of the public voted majority in favour.
- To provide a single document to enable greater clarity for members and firms
- Provides greater focus on clearer example behaviors understanding evolving technology and tackling climate change.
What are the professional obligations of members?
- Comply with CPD requirements. 20 hours for charter professionals of which 10 should be formal
- Members must cooperate with RICS
- Members must promptly provide all information reasonably requested by the Standards and Regulation Board.
What are the professional obligations of firms?
- Publish a CPHP including ADR approved by RICS and maintain a complaints log
- Ensure previous and current work is covered by appropriate PI insurance.
- Sole practitioners must make appropriate arrangements for work to continue in event of death or inability to work.
- Must cooperate with RICS
- Promptly provide all info requested by the Standards and Regulation Board.
- Firms must display RICS logo on business literature in accordance with RICS published policy on designations
- Must report to RICS on matters required under Rules for the Registration of Firms
RICS ethical decision tree?
- Do you have sufficient facts on the issue?
- Is it legal?
- Is it in line with RoC?
- Have you consulted with appropriate people to make an informed decision?
- Do you have clear reasoning?
- Is your decision informed?
- Would you be content for your actions to be made public?
- Decide what action to take, then reflect on snd record the outcome.
Why does the RICS have RoC?
Provide a framework that we can all work to so the client knows they are getting a set level of service
As well as a useful tool for the Institution, they are also useful professional guide for individual Institution members
What are CPD requirements?
Undertake and record appropriate lifelong learning.
On request by RICS must provide evidence they have carried out CPD to maintain and improve levels of competency.
CPD hour requirements?
20 hours - minimum of 10 must be formal.
Or 48/24.
Members must undertake learning on the standards expected around RICS ethics on a rolling 3 year period.
All CPD must be recorded via the RICS online management system.
What activities are included in CPD?
Must have a clear learning objective relevant to my role to count as CPD
Formal can be web based training with structured assessments, formal seminars, providing training to others where research and preparation is required
Informal is private reading, internal CPD’s and on job shadowing.
What is formal CPD?
Does it focus on a relevant topic?
Does it have a formally structured programme?
Do the learning objectives enhance knowledge or develop skills?
Does the learning involve interaction with others such as training or conference?
Or is the learning assessed by a test?
What is informal CPD?
If the outcome is based on self assessment or doesn’t include any testing / formally structured programme.
What is the purpose of CPD?
Continuing professional development.
