  • Irrigate w/ saline
  • Remove under slit lamp exam
  • ABx drop QID until healed
  • +/- patching
  • ?tetanus prophylaxis
  • Opthal consult if globe penetration suspected

  • Abrasion
  • Infection

Treatment of corneal foreign body?

A
  • Remove under magnification using local anaesthetic and sterile needle
  • OR refer to ophthalmology
  • Treat as per corneal abrasion

What is a corneal abrasion?

A

Epithelial defect usually due to trauma (e.g. fingernails, twigs, paper) or contact lens.

Clinical features of corneal abrasion?

A
  • Pain, redness, tearing, photphobia, foreign body sensation
  • De-epithelialised area stains with fluorescein dye
  • Pain relieved with topical anaesthetic

A

Infection, ulceration, recurrent erosion, 2” iritis.

A
  • Topical antibiotic (drops or ointment)
  • Consider topical NSAID, cycloplegic, patch
  • Most clear spontaneously within 24-48h
