Correlations Flashcards
needs practice priority! (6 cards)
Correlation
Correlation studies measure the strength and direction of relationships between co-variables
-if an increase in one variable tends to be associated with an in
Positive correlation? + example
If an increase in one variable tends to be associated with an increase in the other -> positive correlation
-e.g height and weight - taller people tend to be heavier
Negative correlation? + example
If an increase in one variable tends to be associated with a decrease in the other -> negative correlation
-e.g height above sea level and temperature - as you climb a mountain it gets colder
Zero correlation? + example
no relationship between two variables-> zero correlation
-e.g amount of tea drunk and intelligence
Expressing a correlation? SC: S
Scattergram!
-plot figures for one variable against figures for other on a graph
Expressing a correlation? SC: C
Coefficients!
-ranging from -1 to +1
-when working with continuous variables, the correlation coefficient to use is Pearson’s r
-correlation coefficient (r) indicates the extent to which the pairs od numbers for these two variables lie on a straight line -> calculate by drawing a line and calculating gradient of line
