Q

How are we looking back in time when we look at stars?

A

Stars are extremely far away.
Even though light is travelling at the fastest possible speed achievable, it takes a very long time for light to travel to earth. The light left the star in the past. When we see a star what we see is a picture of what the star looked like when the light left.

16
Q

What is the light year?

A

It is a measurement of how far light travels in a year. It is a unit of distance, not time.

17
Q

How far is 1 light year?

A

1 light year = 9.4605284 x 10(15)/ 94605284
