What is a Prosecutor?
The prosecutor is the legal party responsible for presenting the case in a criminal trial against an individual accused of breaking the law.
THE PROSECUTOR IS TELLING THE JUDGE , THEY BELIEVE YOU THE DEFENDENT COMMITED OR DID THESE THINGS THAT ARE CRIMES
What are other names for a Prosecutor?
PROSECUTING ATTORNEY, DISTRICT ATTORNEY, COUNTY ATTORNEY
Who does the Prosecutor /District Attorney Help?
He or she helps the police to prove the criminal charges they gave to the juvenile defendent.
Who is the Defense Attorney
A legally appointed person to represent you . They take your side. They tell the Judge what you want to say. They protect you from the Prosecutor. This person is on your Team.
Who does the Defense Attorney help?
The Client– YOU
What are other names for a Defense Attorney
Public Defender, Lawyer, Criminal Lawyer, Attorney
What is a Judge
A public Officer who has permission to hear what the Prosecutor and Defense Attorney tells them. The Judge also hears what the Police and other witnesses them him/her about the crimes that the Juvenile-You are charged with.
What is the Judge responsible for doing at the end of the court case?
The Judge makes the final decision about whether the Juvenile- You committed (DID) the crimes they have been charged with.
What is a Victim
The person or persons that were hurt when the crime happened
What is a Witness
Someone who comes to court, promises to tell the truth and tells the Judge about information they might have about the crime that was commited (done)
What is a Court Clerk
They are the person who helps the Judge write things down, schedule appointments, collects paperwork, looks up information and more.
What is a Court Liaision
This is the person that helps the Juvenile and everyone else work together
What are Court Hearings?
Different times the Court sets to do certain things in the Case. There are lots of hearings in a Case. Arraignment, Summons or Petition, Status Conferences , Adjudication and Sentencing. There are more then this sometimes
What is a Status Conference?
When the Juvenile checks in with the Courts to see if progress is happening or something has changed
What is an Arraingement or Advisement?
The hearing where the Judge tells the Juvenile _ You everything that will happen. The Judge also tells You that you can plead guilty or not guilty, have a trial or not and what the punishments could be at the end
What is an Adjudication?
The Hearing Where the Juvenile - You is told the final decision by the Judge. The Judge will say whether You are guilty of the crimes charge with or not guilty.
What is a sentencing?
The Hearing where the Judge tells You what your punishment will be.
What is a crime?
An action, where someone did something “like stealing” that is not legal (a law says it cannot be done). There are several different levels of crimes, Status offenses, misdemeanors, felonies
What is a Criminal?
A person who commits or does the illegal act (crime)
What is a status offense?
these are acts that are not legal for a kid but okay for an adult. Running away, smoking, drinking and more
what is a misdemeanor?
These are less serious crimes. Usually the punishment is less severe unless you have a lot of misdemeanors.
What is a Felony?
These are the most serious crimes and the punishment is higher and more severe.
