Covalent Bonding Flashcards
(10 cards)
Where do covalent bonds form?
between pair of non metals
How are electrons transferred in a covalent bond?
non metals share some of their outer electrons to form full outer shells
What is a molecule?
small group of covalently bonded atoms
What force holds covalently bonded atoms together?
electrostatic attraction between nucleus and electrons
What are the properties of covalent MOLECULAR structures?
- low melting point, strong covalent bonds only between atoms - weak attraction between molecules
- poor conductors of electricity, molecules are neutral - no charged particles
What is a dative/co-ordinate bond?
covalent bond in which one atom provides both electrons
How are electrons transferred in a dative/co-ordinate bond?
electron acceptor is electron deficient
electron donator donates lone pair
How is a dative/co-ordinate bond shown?
by an arrow
What properties does Graphite have?
-soft
-conducts electricity
-high melting point
-each carbon forms three single covalent bonds
-trigonal planar
What are the properties of Diamond?
-hard
-doesn’t conduct
-high melting point
-4 covalent bonds to each carbon atom
-tetrahedron
