Covalent Bonding Flashcards
What is covalent bonding?
when a pair of electrons are shared by two atoms
Why do simple molecular structures have low melting and boiling points?
There is less energy required to break the weak intermolecular forces of attraction between the molecules
Why do melting and boiling points increase when the relative formula mass increases?
As the relative formula mass increases, the intermolecular forces of attraction also increase. So, there is more energy required to break the intermolecular forces of attraction.
Why is diamond hard?
Lots of energy required to break apart the strong covalent bonds
Why does graphite conduct electricity?
each carbon atom joins to three other carbon atoms using their outer shell electrons, there is one delocalised electron free to move
