CP1 Motion Flashcards
(30 cards)
Speed
A measure of the distance an object travels in a given time
What is the usual unit for speed?
Metres per second (m/s)
Is speed a vector or scalar? Why?
Scalar, because it only has a magnitude (size) and doesn’t have a direction
What is the typical speed for walking?
1.5 m/s
What is the typical speed for running?
3.0 m/s
What is the typical speed of cycling?
6.0 m/s
What is the typical speed range of a car?
13.0 - 30.0 m/s
What is the typical speed of a steam train?
50 m/s
What is the typical speed of a plane?
250 m/s
How do you calculate speed?
Speed = distance / time
s = d / t
A car travels 2000 meters in 80 seconds. How fast was it travelling?
25 m/s
2000 / 80 = 25
A person jogs 300 metres in 1 minute and 20 seconds. How fast were they travelling?
3.75 m/s
300 / 80 = 3.75
What is the speed of sound in the air?
330 m/s
A car travels 500m in 50s, then. 1500m in 75s. Calculate its average speed for the whole journey.
Average speed = 16 m/s
500 + 1500 = 2,000
50 + 75 = 125
2,000 / 125 = 16
What pieces of lab equipment are used to measure speeds more accurately?
Light gates
Why is using a stopwatch not the most accurate way of measuring time?
Human error and delayed human reaction time
What’s the difference between a vector and a scalar?
A vector quantity has both direction and magnitude, whereas a scalar only has magnitude
Scalar Quantity
A scalar quantity is one that only has a magnitude, and no specific direction
Vector Quantity
A vector quantity is one that has both a magnitude and a direction
Is displacement a scalar or vector quantity?
Vector
Is energy a vector or scalar quantity?
Scalar
Is momentum a vector or scalar quantity?
Vector
Is acceleration a vector or scalar quantity?
Vector
Is speed a vector or scalar quantity?
Scalar
