Situational awareness
Remaining alert and knowing what is occurring in the environment around you

Relaxed and unaware - safe environment (police station)

Relaxed but alert (duties outside police station)

Specific alert (patrol/responding to job)

Baseline behaviour
A ‘baseline’ is an informal measure that determines what is normal and what is not, and can refer to the behaviour of people or the condition of a place or premises
What is a risk?
The chance of someone being harmed, or property being damaged, as a result of being exposed to a threat or hazard.
What is a threat?
Intentional human action
What is hazard based risks?
no intentional human action (flood/fire)

RISK = Likelihood x consequence x vulnerability
What is required for a threat to exist
Threat = intention + capability
What is police discretion?
police discretion is where a police officer uses their own individual judgement to decide the best lawful course of action to take
Why do police use discretion?
to enforce the spirit of the law, rather than the letter of the law
