What is the function of the Olfactory Nerve
The olfactory nerve provides special visceral afferent fibres for the sense of smell
What is the function of the Optic Nerve
- Special somatic afferent fibres for vision
- Afferent limb of the pupillary reflex
What is the function of the Oculomotor nerve
- Efferent fibres to extra-ocular muscles (inferior oblique, and superior, medial and inferior recti). CN III palsy hence causes a ‘down and out’ eye
- Efferent limb of the pupillary light reflex via pupillary constrictor muscles
- Levator palpebrae superioris
What is the function of the Trochlear Nerve
- General somatic efferent to the extra-ocular muscle, superior oblique
What is the function of the Trigeminal Nerve
Light touch, temperature and pain sensation
- Ophthalmic division: sensation of face above the lower eyelid
- Maxillary division: sensation of face between the lower eyelid and upper lip
- Mandibular division: sensation of face below the upper lip. Motor efferent to muscles of mastication
What is the function of the Abducens Nerve
- General somatic efferent to the lateral rectus muscle, that abducts the eye
What is the function of the Facial Nerve
- Special visceral efferent fibres for muscles of facial expression
- General visceral efferent fibres for the lacrimal glands, submandibular glands and sublingual glands
- Special visceral afferent fibres for taste in the anterior 2/3 of the tongue
- General somatic afferent fibres for sensation of the skin behind the ear
What is the function of the Vestibulocochlear nerve
Special somatic afferent fibres for hearing and balance
What is the function of the Glossopharyngeal nerve
- Sensation to the posterior 1/3 of the tongue and pharynx
- Special visceral afferent for taste from the posterior 1/3 of the tongue
- Sensation from the carotid body and carotid sinus
- Parasympathetic to Parotid glands
- Motor to stylopharyngeus
What is the function of the Vagus Nerve
Parasympathetic innervation of the viscera
- Sensation the skin around the ear
- Taste and sensation of the epiglottis
- Sensory information from body viscera
- Parasympathetic to glands of GI tract
- Motor innervation to soft palate, pharynx and larynx
What is the function of the Accessory Nerve
Motor efferent fibres for innervation of:
- Sternocleidomastoid
- Trapezius
What is the function of the Hypoglossal nerve
General somatic efferent fibres for muscles of the tongue
