Olfactory,
Smell, Identify Odor (Taste/Smell)
What is cranial nerve II, what does it do? How do you test it?
Optic, Vision,
Snellen/Rosenbaum chart, Test peripheral vision by wiggling fingers
What is cranial nerve III, what does it do? How do you test it?
Oculomotor, Eye MOVEMENT/Pupil Response,
Six cardinal fields of gaze, pupil size, Cover/uncover
What is cranial nerve IV? What does it do? How do you test it?
Trochlear, Eye MOVEMENT/Pupil Response,
Six cardinal fields of gaze, pupil size, Cover/uncover
What is cranial nerve V? What does it do? How do you test it?
Trigeminal, Corneal reflex, jaw, face sensation,
Evaluate Sharp/Dull/Light touch to cheek/chin
Test Corneal reflex (touch eye lightly with cotton wisp)

Abducens- Eye Movements
Six cardinal fields of gaze, pupil size, Cover/uncover
What is cranial nerve VII? What does it do? How do you test it?
Facial- Facial Expression
Observe expressions (smile, squeeze eyes, clench teeth)
Touch (cotton on skin)
What is cranial nerve VIII? What does it do? How do you test it?
Vestibular (Acoustic)- Hearing/Balance
Whisper test
Romberg Test (feet together, eyes closed, arms side)
+ loss of balance completely
What is cranial nerve IX? What does it do? How do you test it?
Glossopharyngeal- Taste/Gag/Swallow
Observe swallow/gag, taste salty,sour,sweet, bitter
What is cranial nerve X? What does it do? How do you test it?
Vagus-Gag-Digestion-Defecation
Observe “AH” and movement of soft palate and uvula for symmetry
What is cranial nerve XI? What does it do? How do you test it?
Spinal Accessory-Shoulder shrug
Assess for symmetrical shoulder shrug
What is cranial nerve XII? What does it do? How do you test it?
Hypoglossal-Tongue movement
Test tongue strength,movements
Ask to move tongue side to side
