Cranial Nerves Flashcards
(37 cards)
Cranial Nerve 1
Olfactory - Smell (sensory)
Does noxious (skunk) stimuli stimulate cranial nerve #1?
No (surrounding nerves)
Cranial Nerve 2
Optic - Peripheral Vision (sensory)
How do we test cranial nerve 2
cover 1 eye - use Snellen chart/color vision
How do we test cranial nerve 1
close eyes and 1 nostril - smell
Cranial Nerve 3, 4 and 6
Eye Movements - pupils to light
How do we test cranial nerves 3,4, and 6
follow finger in “H” pattern
shine light into pupils (dilation)
cranial nerve 5
Facial Sensation/Jaw Movement (forehead, cheek, lower jaw) - sensory and motor
how do we test cranial nerve #5
fingers on temple ask pt. to bite down can you separate
is this “hard or soft” around the face
cranial nerve #7
Facial Movement/Taste (anterior 2/3 of tongue)
how do we test cranial nerve #7
Ask patient to close eyes tight, raise eyebrows, smile, frown and puff out cheeks.
cranial nerve #8
Acoustic - hearing/balance (sensory)
how do we test cranial nerve #8
cover one ear and then whisper in the opposite ear or use a ticking watch
cranial nerves 9 and 10
sensation to posterior 1/3 of tongue; swallowing (sensory and motor)
how do we assess nerves 9 and 10
say “ahh” note upward movement of the palate and uvula. Check gag and cough reflex. Listen to speech, hoarse? dysarthric(stuttering)?
cranial nerve #11
spinal accessory - motor nerve
how do we test cranial nerve #11
shrug shoulders, turn head to one side while applying pressure in the opposite direction. Check both sides
cranial nerve #12
tongue movement (motor)
how to test cranial nerve #12
stick out tongue move it side to side.
Say light/tight
most sensitive indicator of neurological change
LOC
sensory cranial nerves
1, 2, 8,
motor cranial nerves
3, 4, 6, 11, 12
sensory and motor cranial nerves
5, 7, 9, 10
pneumonic for cranial nerves
oh oh oh to touch and feel a girls very soft hands
