Jamestown
First permanent English settlement in North America
indentured servants
workers who exchanged labor for a home and food in English colonies for a defined period of time.
Many worked on tobacco farms before slavery became established until about 1700
Puritan
A member of a religious group known for its strict Christian beliefs
mercantilism
A belief that nations should get gold and silver and become powerful. They can do so by having colonies by selling more goods than it buys.
triangular trade
the pattern of shipping trade across the Atlantic
middle passage
It was one lege of the triangular trade, which had three main parts: 1) merchants carried rum and other goods from New England to Africa; 2) thel;y lbrought slaves from Africa to the West Indies, where they sold them fro sugar and molasses; 3) finallly, they sold those goods in New England.
French and Indian War
A war that gave the British control of North America. It was between the British and the French. Native Americans tribes chose a side.
Proclamation of 1763
A lawa passed by the British Parliament after the French and Indian War to limt the area of English settlement in order to preven English colonist to move into Indian territory that was won after the war

New England colonies
a group of British colonies established along the northeastern coast of North America, primarily during the 17th century.
These colonies, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire, were founded by English religious dissenters, notably Puritans and Separatists seeking religious freedom and autonomy
New England Geography & Economy
It had short warm summers and long cold winters which led to short farming seasons. Farmers only produced enough food for themselves.
Most people worked in whaling, manufacturing, lumber, and shipping industries. Many people where merchants.
Middle colonies
They were located in the center of the thirteen British colonies in North America, included Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. They were known for their diverse populations, fertile land, and thriving economy based on agriculture and trade.
Unlike the strict religious environment of New England or the plantation-based economy of the South, the Middle Colonies offered a more tolerant and mixed society.
Southern Colonies
There were distinct from the New England and Middle Colonies in several key ways. Primarily, they were defined by their agrarian economy, reliance on slave labor for plantation agriculture, and a social structure heavily influenced by this economic system. The Southern Colonies included Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
They had long, hot summers and short cool winters which made the Southern states great to produce cash crops.
