CRF Flashcards
What is glomerularonephritis?
Inflammation of the glomerulus
What is chronic kidney disease?
Process of continuing significant reduction in renal fiction.
Corresponds to CKD stages 3-5
Risk factors for CKD?
Past AKI
URINARY TRACT ABNORMALITIES
PROTEINURIA IS NEPHROTOXIC
CO-MORBIDITIES
Common causes of CKD?
Diabetic nephropathy (MC)
Hypertensive nephropathy
Chronic glomerulonephritis
What is the prognosis of dialysis?
5 year survival rate is 20%
Survival worse in peritoneal dialysis than haemodialysis
Kidney transplant provides better QOL
What is dialysis and what are the types?
Process of removing waste and excess water from the blood.
Haemodialysis - blood pumped through semi-permeable membrane
Peritoneal dialysis - use abdomen as a membrane, pass sterile glucose solution through abdominal cavity.
How does chronic hypertension damage kidneys?
HTN -> damage to arterial ward -> hyaline arteriosclerosis -> narrowed lumen -> ischemia of renal parenchyma and ischemic atrophy of glomeruli -> kidney scarring (and smaller?) -> nephrosclerisis
