Introduction to crime
A crime is an illegal act that is harmful not only to some individual but also to a community, society, or the state.
Perception of crime
The perception of crime is influenced by various factors, often diverging from actual crime statistics. Key points include:
Discrepancy in Perception: Many Americans believe crime is rising nationally but feel safer in their own communities.
Influence of Media: Media coverage significantly shapes public perception, often exaggerating the threat of crime compared to actual data.
2
Factors Beyond Statistics: Public perception can be influenced by personal experiences, community dynamics, and media portrayal, rather than just crime rates.
Local News Impact: Local news coverage plays a crucial role in shaping how people perceive crime in their areas.
These factors collectively contribute to how crime is perceived by the public, often leading to heightened fears that may not align with reality.
Recording crime perception vs Reality
Overall, our results, across all model specifications, demonstrate that perceived crime always matters, while real crime only matters to those on high-incomes. We also find that females tend to be more sensitive to their perceptions, while living outside major cities does not have a significant effect.
Mapping crime - GIS
Crime Analysis can be used to enhance public safety, identify emerging trends, organize law enforcement operations and plan crime-prevention strategies.
It improves productivity of crime analysts with specialized tools and a tailored desktop GIS interface for mapping data and performing spatial analysis, making it easier to quickly generate high-quality crime analysis map products.
Crime and the built environment
The importance of the built environment in fostering crime is also explained by theories in environmental criminology, including crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) and situational crime prevention
Designing out crime
involves making changes to the design and layout of the built environment to reduce opportunities for crime.
Case study - 2024 UK Riots
From 30 July to 5 August 2024,[a] far-right, anti-immigration protests and riots occurred in England and Northern Ireland,[b] within the United Kingdom.[37] This followed a mass stabbing of girls at a dance party in Southport on 29 July in which three children were killed.
