Q

Status frustration

A

Cohen agrees that deviance is a working class phenomenon - criticised mertons strain theory and said he only focused on utilitarian crime - argued delinquent acts are prompted by status frustration- attempts to gain status through alternative ways - said those most likely to commit deviant acts are those who live in deprived areas and lower streams in schools as they are less likely to get a job - said working class boys face anomie and suffer from cultural deprivation- leaves them at the bottom of the status hierarchy-creates an alternative hierarchy that’s based on spite - ao3 - offers explanation for group based crime - however it assumes wc boys share the same goals as the middle class
