Formal or informal organization consisting of at least 5 members, who commit at least 4 crimes in a 2 year period.

History of American Gangs
Modern day street gangs began in 19th century, in northeast areas of America
Reasons for joining a gang
Lack of role models; insufficient supervision; protection; satisfy social needs
Reasons for the spread of criminal gangs
Forced moves; crime expansion; entertainment industry; technology
Traditional gangs
Active long term, known country wide, examples include crips, bloods, Mexican mafia, aryan brotherhood, etc
Hybrid gangs
Active for shorter time frame; adopt signs and goals of traditional gang but not connected.
Non traditional gangs
First fang seen in community, known as wannabe’s, short term or no goals
Trial by ordeal
Require prospective members to prove themselves to the gang over certain period of time, ex. Hells Angel Prospect
Criminal gang identifiers
Symbols, graffiti, clothing, gang tattoos, hand signs, monikers, etc.
