What is CRISPR?
CRISPR, or clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, is a method of genetics engineering that can alter the DNA of humans and eliminate terminating illness or enhance parts of DNA.
What is Cas9, and what makes it so important in CRISPR?
Cas9 is one protein of CRISPR that locates and cuts out part of DNA so that it can be replaced or be removed to enhance part of the human genetics.
Who is Dr. Josiah Zayner?
A biohacker and the CEO of The ODIN who publicly injected himself with CRISPR DNA to enhance his muscles and believes in the right to alter one’s DNA.
What is The ODIN?
The ODIN is a pro-bio-engineering company that sells DIY genetic engineering kits so that customers may alter their own DNA.
How are CRISPR and the eugenics movement similar? How are they different?
Similarities:
- Promotion of “better” DNA
- Degradation of other characteristics
Differences:
- Ability to stop terminal illnesses or viral infections
- No forcing people to alter their biology
Why is CRISPR controversial?
The reason for CRISPR’s controversy is due to the non-therapeutic uses it can provide. With genetic altering soon becoming widely available, people don’t want a repeat of the eugenics movement in which more “desirable” traits are promoted in society. Another controversy is the safety regulations that come with genetic alterations. Some may be able to bypass safety rules and cause damage to themselves or others.
