Q

How are CRISPR and the eugenics movement similar? How are they different?

A

Similarities:

  • Promotion of “better” DNA
  • Degradation of other characteristics

Differences:

  • Ability to stop terminal illnesses or viral infections
  • No forcing people to alter their biology

Q

Why is CRISPR controversial?

A

The reason for CRISPR’s controversy is due to the non-therapeutic uses it can provide. With genetic altering soon becoming widely available, people don’t want a repeat of the eugenics movement in which more “desirable” traits are promoted in society. Another controversy is the safety regulations that come with genetic alterations. Some may be able to bypass safety rules and cause damage to themselves or others.
