Cromwell was a puritan who opposed Charles I in the long parliament.

Long parliament ran from 1640-1648.

Cromwell fought for parliament.

He was not directly involved but people believe he helped Colonel Pride to plan it.
What was prides purge?
Prides purge was when Colonel Pride led his regiments into parliament and kicked out all the MP’s who didn’t want a government without a king.

Yes he was one of the first men to sign it.
When did Cromwell challenges Charles I?
Cromwell tried Charles in 1649.

Parliament asked Cromwell to crush the remaining rebel royalists -Charles I supporters.

He crushed them brutally in Ireland and Scotland.

He argued with them because they were too radical and were making decisions too fast.

He worked with Major Generals so England was virtually a military dictatorship.

Cromwell introduced greater religious freedom for Protestants.

As Lord Protector, Cromwell passed puritan laws -banned Christmas and Theatre.

He built up the Navy, defeated the Dutch and took Jamaica from Spain.

Cromwell’s son Richard took over but in 1660 Charles II was made king.
