what were monasteries previously used for
-used to prey, house monks and nuns , places of shelter
what happened to monasteries reputation in the 16c
-vanished in reputation, few monks in the monasteries, monks were living luxury due to the income they’d get from the monastic lands
why did Cromwell an hviii want dissolution of monasteries
4 reasons
1-wealth- monastic lands could double the crowns annual income , need for f.p
2-to sell crown lands to nobility to gain additional support
3-to remove any reminders of catholicism
4-their role was to prey for the salvation of souls- Ideology, Cromwell and HVIII wanted P
