Crooks lives in constant pain and fear He can’t leave the this place because this is probably the best his life will ever be.
How is Crooks linked to the keyword Loneliness ?
Crooks is completed isolated and is one of the most lonely characters in the novel. He further isolates himself for security. He needs to stay away from people because they pose a threat to him.
How is Crooks linked to the second keyword dreams ?
- Dreams – He does allow himself to dream. This is short lived as Curley’s wife reminds him she can have him lynched. He immediately backs down.
How is Crooks linked to the third keyword Prejudice/Segregation
Crooks is obviously a clear victim of the Jim Crow laws. Steinbeck shows us the power women had over black people too. It doesn’t matter how skilled he is or how much he can contribute to society. He is black so he will always be forced to live in terrible conditions. He seems to accept this as he is aware that fighting this could make things infinitely worse for him.
