Crook’s intelligence and proudness foreshadows his awareness of the unachievability of the American Dream and his voice is a vehicle to expose the extent to isolation when he speaks to Lennie in chapter 4

ISOLATION TURINING THEM AGAINST ONE ANOTHER
All reassert power over one another: shows hierarchy of ranch.

Crook’s seemed to grow smaller ‘yes mam’
“I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it aint even funny’
