CRP Flashcards

1
Q

CRP

why CRP can be detected in patients having blood transfusions and surgical operations?

A

blood transfusions and surgical procedures trigger inflammatory responses in the body, which can lead to elevated CRP levels.

CRP is also often associated in TB, patients w/ burns, bulbous lesions

Q

CRP

what is the principle? explain

A

AGGLUTINATION
this is a latex test intended to be used to qualitatively and semi-quantitatively determine the presence or absence of CRP ind the serum/plasma

Q

CRP

prolonged storage at temp outside 2-8C may result in?

A

accelerated loss of reagent reactivity

Q

CRP

why specimens should be drawn for CRP should use an aseptic phlebotomy technique?

A

CRP levels are sensitive to certain substances released during inflammation and contaminants can interfere. So specimens must be free from bacterial contamination, fibrin, gross lipemia, and gross hemolysis.

Q

CRP

what are the causes of false results?

A
  1. test is interpreted after more than 2 mins
  2. contaminated specimens and test materials
  3. hemolyzed samples
  4. improper storage of test materials
  5. deviation from recommended techniques

Q

CRP

why slide test should be interpreted immediately after the 2 mins rotation period?

A

because a negative result might be incorrectly interpreted as positive due to drying of the reagent

reactions beyond 2 mins is considered as INVALID

Q

CRP

are CRP and ESR related? if you say so, compare and contrast the two.

A

yes, CRP is the partner of ESR which is also an inflammatory marker. they just differ on the time wherein they are recognized in the body. CRP is rapidly produced while ESR is delayed and has only a moderate type of sensitivity. but still, they are both nonspecific to any inflammation or infection.

Q

CRP

why females have higher CRP than males?

A

females have higher levels than men mainly because they are built to get pregnant and give birth sooner or later which means, they need to have higher levels of CRP than men.

Q

CRP

how can you differentiate positive APPs and negative APPs?

A

positive APPs increases when there is an inflammation happening in your body. for example, CRP, expect that your CRP levels to be increased when you are having an inflammation in your body. meanwhile, negative APPs decreases when there is an inflammation or infection.

Q

CRP

why CRP is not very specific?

A

non-specific because there are a lot of types of infections in the body. when you say inflammations, it could be tumor, cancer fever, etc. it could be broadened up into different types of inflammations and infections.

if ever there is an increase levels of your CRP, then it could mean that there are many things going on inside your body thus you cannot conclude to have a specific infection since again, CRP is not specific

Q

CRP

if CRP is nonspecific then what will you do for it to be useful and effective?

A

CRP needs to be paired up with certain markers for it to be effective and to attain a very precise and accurate result. if it is increased, the doctors can pair it up with different enzyme markers to assess the liver or creatine to asses the kidneys.

Q

CRP

site an example with the uses of measuring CRP levels in your body. explain.

A

CRP level may be useful for monitoring the effect of treatment and for detection of post-operative complications intercurrent infections. this can also help in monitoring disease progresses or flares.

Q

CRP

explain CRP and relate to your body mass.

A

the higher your weight is, the more CRP is being produced. so, it is directly proportional, it will be both increased or both decreased.

an example can be obesity, obesity is considered as inflammation which in return causes increase in CRP.

Q

CRP

when you exercise, your CRP levels will decrease or increase?

A

the more you exercise, the more decreased your CRP levels are because your body will be more suitable to prevent inflammation and infections from happening.

Q

CRP

why CRP is decreased when you consume alcohol?

A

given that is not chronic alcohol consumption, it might be a short term effect due to the way the liver processes alcohol, not an actual reduction in inflammation.

Q

CRP

why blacks tend to have higher levels than whites?

A

maybe because black populations have higher prevalence of conditions like obesity, diabetes, and chronic stress, all of which are associated with elevated CRP.

17
Q

CRP

differentiate CRP and hs-CRP

A

hs-CRP is a higher type of sensitivity c-reactive protein which means that it is made to be a marker for cardiovascular injuries or diseases like stroke or block formations. it can also be a risk factor for hypotension and also adds to the predictive value of total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol.
