Q

Describe how crude oil is heated by fractional distillation?

A
  • Crude oil is heated at very high temperature
  • Vapours pass into a fractionating column and rise up the column
  • Smaller hydrocarbons have a lower b.p so condenses from the top of the column
  • Bigger hydrocarbons have a higher b.p so condenses lower down the column

Q

What are the properties of hydrocarbons?

A
  • They get more viscous (flow very slowly)
  • Smaller hydrocarbons are flammable
  • Bigger hydrocarbons do not burn as easily
  • Smaller chained hydrocarbons are volatile (evaporate easily)
