Crude Oil Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
What is crude oil?
A
- a finite and a non renewable resource
- complex mixture of hydrocarbons
2
Q
What is a hydrocarbon
A
a molecule that contains carbon and hydrogen atoms only
3
Q
Describe how crude oil is heated by fractional distillation?
A
- Crude oil is heated at very high temperature
- Vapours pass into a fractionating column and rise up the column
- Smaller hydrocarbons have a lower b.p so condenses from the top of the column
- Bigger hydrocarbons have a higher b.p so condenses lower down the column
4
Q
Products of distillation of crude oil?
A
- Refinery Gases
- Petrol
- Kerosene
- Diesel
- Fuel Oil
- Bitumen
5
Q
What are the properties of hydrocarbons?
A
- They get more viscous (flow very slowly)
- Smaller hydrocarbons are flammable
- Bigger hydrocarbons do not burn as easily
- Smaller chained hydrocarbons are volatile (evaporate easily)
6
Q
Why is carbon monoxide harmful, in terms of red blood cells?
A
- Prevents red blood cells to carry oxygen in the body
- This can cause breathing difficulties and death
